GMAW WELDING
Metal Inert Gas (MIG) and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) Capabilities.
Fusion Welding Services
Offering Nadcap-accredited fusion welding services, with a specialization in GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding).
The MIG welding process differs from TIG welding and has distinct applications in material joining. The primary characteristic of GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) is the continuous feeding of the electrode/filler material through the welding gun. In this process, the electrode is melted and deposited into the base material to form the weld joint. The welding gun also produces a shielding gas to protect the weld from contamination. GMAW employs inert gases such as argon, helium, and sometimes carbon dioxide, depending on the specific application and material. The consumable electrode typically comes in spools and is identified by the American Welding Society with the letters ER, followed by numbers indicating unique characteristics, including the wire's strength.
There are various types of metal transfer in GMAW, each using different voltages and currents to achieve optimal weld results. GMAW includes four metal transfer methods: globular transfer, pulsed arc, short-circuiting, and spray transfer. The selection of the method depends on the material and application.
The wire and base material must be clean to ensure a quality weld, as contamination can affect the weld. GMAW tends to lose more shielding gas compared to GTAW, presenting a challenge in maintaining penetration. However, with an experienced welder, the correct setup, and proper deposition methods, adequate penetration can be achieved. GMAW is often considered a more heavy-duty process, suitable for structural welding applications. The team is well-qualified and experienced in performing both GTAW and GMAW to produce quality, clean, and successful welds.
